Does a morning practice that supports physical, social, and psychological wellbeing appeal to you?
Contact Improvisation is a dynamic partner dance practice without gendered roles or a fixed vocabulary of steps. Instead, the focus is on deep somatic awareness, collaborative problem solving, and play. Equal parts dance, movement meditation, and functional fitness, Contact Improvisation integrates body and mind while inviting creativity, connection, and joy.
At the core of Contact Improvisation is the physical practice of listening. From this foundation, we develop the capacity to respond, yield, support, and take initiative. There is no single correct way to move, only choices that cultivate safety, build rapport, and shift attention from the overthinking mind to the intelligence of the body. Abstract concepts like trust, balance, and cooperation become tangible experiences and participants often become aware of deeply embedded patterns and habits while discovering new possibilities for self-expression.
Contact Improvisation operates in spherical space, offering an alternative to our habitual attachment to "front." Expanding awareness in every direction cultivates embodied intelligence. Participants learn to rely less on vision and more on tactile sensation and proprioception, resulting in movement that is grounded, responsive, bold, and fluid.
Through guided solo and partner explorations, participants discover efficient pathways for moving through space and transitioning between levels, on and off the floor. Strength is developed not through rote repetition, but through functional movement and respect for one's individual limits, abilities, and needs.
This class is a welcoming space for anyone looking to increase their embodied intelligence through a playful, relational, and profound dance practice that continues to grow in popularity around the world. No prior experience required.
