Clay & Ritual:
Create a Personal Incense Burner
with Jill Bell
Tuesday, July 28th
6:30-8:30pm
Slow down, get creative, and spend some time working with clay, designing a one-of-a-kind incense burner for your home or sacred space. In this beginner-friendly hand building workshop, participants will explore form, function, and personal expression while learning foundational ceramic techniques in a relaxed and welcoming environment.
Explore a variety of incense burner styles and discuss how form and function work together for different types of incense. Learn handbuilding techniques—including pinch, coil, and slab construction—to create a one-of-a-kind incense burner inspired by your own aesthetic and daily rituals, then personalize it with colorful underglaze decoration. Finished work will be kiln-fired and available for pickup approximately 2–3 weeks after class. No prior clay experience is necessary. All materials, tools, glazing, and firing are included.

Jill Bell
Jill Bell is a Brooklyn-based sculptor working primarily in clay. Her practice includes figurative wall pieces and hand-built functional ware, often featuring expressive faces and animated forms. Through sculpture, she explores the emotional and psychological complexity of everyday experience, creating characters that feel at once familiar, awkward, resilient, and deeply human. Her work weaves together humor and sadness, drawing viewers into scenes that are at once surreal and recognizable. Bell’s work has been exhibited across the United States and is held in collections including the San Angelo Museum of Fine Art, Rohm & Haas, and private collectors Derek Mason and Dan Jacobs. In addition to her studio practice, she is the founder and co-organizer of the Brooklyn Ceramic Arts Tour (BCAT)—an annual 4-day long event that brings visibility to Brooklyn’s vibrant ceramics community by fostering connection and collaboration among artists, studios, local businesses and the public.
