afterschool Tie-dye

Creativity is healing. Tie-Dye is FUN!

Come learn traditional and experimental dye techniques with Maha Rose founder Lisa Levine. In the afterschool edition of this class we will have educational and free studio time to explore traditional and experimental dye techniques.

You can dye new or used items: clothing, sheets, curtains, etc.. Use your imagination.

The only requirement is that the material is natural: cotton, silk or wool, etc.

Bring anything you’d like to give new life to through the application of COLOR.

Wear clothing you can get messy.

Bring what you want to dye and some plastic bags to bring things home in.

We’ll supply the dyes, gloves, techniques and space to experiment.

Recommended for ages 7 and up!

what to bring!

  • Please wear clothes you can get messy and wet. Shoes too, that can get wet and potentially splashed with dye.

  • Bring anything and everything you want to dye: new things, old things, stained things, big things, little things. We’ll dye as much as we can. If you have new things its best to wash them beforehand so they dye better.

  • Clothing and items have to be natural materials: cotton, silk, wool, linen. Fabric that is a blend may be dyed but the colors won’t be as strong.

  • Bring plastic bags (can be used bags) to bring wet (and full of dye) things home.

If there are specific techniques you’d like to learn send me pics so I can make sure I know how to do them. I work with both traditional and experimental techniques.

We will supply dyes and gloves.

rinsing instructions

  • Let your items sit for 6-24 hours before rinsing.

  • Rinse your items one at a time, or more if they are smaller in your sink or shower with cool or warm water

  • Once the water runs 85% clear you can wash them in a washing machine. I wash items with different colors together and have never had a problem. If you did have something that was very dark and something else very light, you could wash them separately.

  • Very bright of very dark items may need one or two more washes with only dark or light items before they are completely colorsafe.
