Wednesday Nights in May
with Jasmine Ben-Reuven
Develop your self-awareness abilities and meditative mind-consciousness through a movement lesson based on practical and gentle movements that will improve flexibility, range of motion, coordination and fluidity of your body system.
In Awareness Through Movement® (A.T.M.) lessons, students are verbally guided to engage in precisely structured movement explorations that involve thinking, sensing, moving, and imagining. Most lessons are based on developmental movements and ordinary functional activities, but some are based on more abstract explorations of joint, muscle, and postural relationships. The lessons consist of comfortable, easy movements that gradually evolve into movements of greater range and complexity. Each lesson is different, but we will typically begin with a body-scan while lying on the floor to attend to our internal environment. In an A.T.M. class, it’s not about adjustments or conforming to a “correct” or “right” movement. Rather, it’s about your internal state of awareness and relationship with yourself in the context of a movement exploration. These classes are for any and all movement abilities, and are perfect for those recovering from injury, as they are non-strenuous.
A major goal of A.T.M. lessons is to learn how one’s most basic functions are organized and improve on them. By experiencing the details of how one performs any action, the student has the opportunity to learn how to:
Awareness Through Movement® lessons create a context for the student to become aware of his/her habitual neuromuscular patterns, and to expand options for new ways of moving while increasing sensitivity and improving efficiency. Awareness Through Movement® lessons derive from the Feldenkrais Method® of Somatic Education. There are hundreds of A.T.M. lessons contained in the Feldenkrais Method® that vary, for all levels of movement ability, from simple in structure and physical demand, to more difficult lessons.
Please wear warm, comfortable clothes that are easy to move in. Socks, long sleeves and long pants are recommended to allow for comfortable sliding movements and to minimize friction with the floor.
