The Enneagram is a personality typology that combines ancient wisdom with insights from modern psychology for the most powerful tool for self-awareness there is. It sheds light on our unconscious patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving and highlights nine basic motivations stemming from nine fundamental needs and perspectives of human nature.

This series of workshops will go beyond learning the typology and into how to use the Enneagram to be more present in body, heart, and mind for greater psychological and spiritual well-being and freedom. The Enneagram is only understood through living its wisdom, and the aim of this series is to be a support in guiding you to practice the insights the Enneagram yields.

The first class (6/1) will be an overview of the nine types of the Enneagram from the perspective of how each type is a lens for encountering specific obstacles and pathways to transformation, grounded in a Fourth Way perspective. The emphasis will be on understanding the significance of the body, heart, and mind as the centers of intelligence the types spring from.

In our second class (6/8), we will cover the Instinctual Drives: the Self-Preservation, Sexual, and Social Drives of the Enneagram. This crucial and fascinating aspect of the Enneagram is generally not well understood, but plays a vital role in our transformation. With so much talk about mindfulness, authentic mindfulness begins with presence to the sensations of the body, and using the Instinctual Drives helps to develop a powerful vocabulary for developing awareness around some of our most unconscious blindspots.

Class number three (6/15) will explore the numerous patterns and strategies between types that occur in triads to help us understand not only our own tendencies, but to come to better deepen our compassion for and relationships with others. Why do three different types employ similar behaviors, but have entirely different motivations for doing so? What messages am I unconsciously broadcasting to others, outside my awareness?

The final class (6/22) in this series will integrate all we've learned before as an invitation to reconsider how we understand and strive for psychological and spiritual development. One of the greatest gifts of the Enneagram is providing a clear path of development and transformation, both for each specific type as well as providing insight for what a spiritual path and inner work actually entails.

What is an inner life?

John specializes in understanding the inner work lineage of the Enneagram and the Instinctual Drives from a biological and Inner Work perspective. He is co-founder of New York Enneagram and currently working on a book that explores how these seemingly opposing conditions of our nature interweave and cooperate to express the fullness of who we are, and how to use this understanding for real inner work and transformation. John has taught numerous Enneagram workshops and classes in the United States and Italy for children, teens, and adults, and has led workshops and inner work retreats based on original material. He has been a presenter at the Conference of the International Enneagram Association and Shift Network's Enneagram Global Summit. In 2018, John began co-facilitating group pilgrimages through Egypt in order to connect the living tradition of inner work with its roots and origins. John's interests have led to a deep involvement in Gurdjieff Work in the lineage of J.G. Bennett, The Gurdjieff Movements, Jungian group work, and meditation practice. He has studied extensively with The Enneagram Institute, and is an apprentice psycho-spiritual facilitator in Integrative Breathwork through the Inspiration Consciousness School in Baltimore, MD.
