SEVEN OF SWORDS

The Seven of Swords accompanies us as we move through the last week of October. Quite literally this card is about movement, as early divination attributed this card’s presence to travel; however, let’s take a cue from our arrival into Scorpio and dive deeper into this card, bringing the hermetic principle of rhythm along the way.

I find the seven of each suit to be challenging and even a bit enigmatic. We saw the Seven of Cups earlier in the month, which asked us to consider what we were choosing to connect to in regards to our desire…the Seven of Swords asks yet another probing question: what is it that you think you need to hide from or escape? Remember this is a sword card, so we are traveling through the mental plane. Are you concerned with being seen or caught? Have you created consequences in your mind to what you are “getting away with”? There is an element of fear, shame, and even paranoia that sits within this card, but contrary to what you might think, it’s not all bad, and that is because the seven of every suit is about victory. So the sevens of the Tarot actually asks those hard questions which enable us to truly see ourselves, whether it be through the lens of our desire, thought process, work routine, or boundaries. It is through our true reflection that we can then claim victory and move on.

Here we can understand more by reviewing the principle of rhythm in hermeticism from the Kybalion

   "Everything flows, out and in; everything has its tides;

   all things rise and fall; the pendulum-swing manifests in

   everything; the measure of the swing to the right is the

   measure of the swing to the left; rhythm compensates."

--The Kybalion.

The Kybalion reveals that nature of victory is the nature of flow, it is the rise and fall that never ends. It is about the equal and opposite measure of the pendulum’s swing, an action and a reaction. The Seven of Swords asks you to look at your mind, and the thought patterns it generates that create fear. The fear of being seen, the fear of being criticized, the fear of being condemned. The back and forth that paralyzes us from moving any way at all. We attract those things by fearing them. Look at the image: two swords stand straight in the ground, while the traveler tries to get away juggling five others. He thinks he can get away and be victorious. But does he realize the principle of rhythm, the flow that wherever he is, the law remains the same? As he looks behind, he actually draws attention to his action.

Let us see the medicine of the Seven of Swords in its best sense: the Seven says we can leave the camp that does not support our new found determination. We can let the swords (thoughts) remain that no longer serve us. We can stop looking behind to see what other’s think. The Seven of Swords in this time of Scorpio says it’s time to change those thought patterns. Train your mind to serve you, not hurt you, and look ahead to claim your victory.
